PYMATUNING STATE PARK TO UNDERGO $2.3 MILLION IN IMPROVEMENTS COLUMBUS, OH -- A planned $2.3 million capital improvement project at Pymatuning State Park in Ashtabula County will temporarily close the park's campground in August, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). Campers will be directed to accommodations at nearby state parks and private campgrounds during the construction period. Campground construction will not affect the park's popular swimming beach, which will remain open throughout the project. Boating facilities and picnic areas will not be affected. The project will upgrade the park's wastewater treatment and sewer collection systems, which are more than 30 years old. In addition to the 373-site campground, the treatment plants and sewer system serve the park's 33 standard cottages and 27 vacation cottages. The project will greatly improve efficiency of wastewater and sanitary facilities used by all park guests. Other benefits of the project include upgrades of 18 campsites, providing sewer and water hookups along with electrical service. The campground is scheduled to close August 6 and reopen in mid-May 2002. As work on the park infrastructure progresses, portions of the cottage area will be closed temporarily. Nearly half of the park's three-season standard cottages will close in September, about a month earlier than usual, although the remainder will remain open until the first half are completed. The two-bedroom family vacation cottages, which are typically available year-round, are scheduled to close in March 2002 and reopen in June 2002. All the wastewater system improvements should be completed in the summer of 2002. Following this project, a portion of the park's access roads will be repaved. The general contractor for the project is Clemson Excavating, Inc. of Chardon. The mechanical contractor is Antenucci, Inc. of Warren. S. M. Electrical, Inc., of Austintown, will serve as the electrical contractor for the project. State park campgrounds in the region include Mosquito Lake State Park in Trumbull County, Punderson State Park in Geauga County and Geneva State Park in Ashtabula County. The campground at West Branch State Park in Portage County is also closed for improvements during the 2001 camping season.
